Amtrak Crew Exchange at Centertown

Photos by Dan Harding

Out in the middle of the state, and out in the middle of nowhere, the eastbound and westbound Amtrak Mules stop to exchange crews. This way, the crews based in St. Louis and Kansas City only have to do an out and back, with no layover. The locomotives stop facing each other to swap their engineers.

The eastbound train, in a cool paint scheme, pulls forward until the tail cars on each train are aligned. Then the conductors will swap trains.

The departing conductor that attended to our every need from Kirkwood, cannot believe we have opened the vestibule window and are leaning out to take his picture.
