Sign outside the UP DeSoto Car Shop with DD-40AX in the background

If you look real close, will will see that there is actually a backhoe inside the coal gon

The folks who work here are proud of what they do

Ali Shahriary gives a thumbs up to be on a live DD-40

Ali makes sure all the gauges read properly before heading out onto the main line

If Ali can run a locomotive on the WF&P, Glenn can do it on the UP, providing it is decoder equipped for DCC.

Long view down the length of the DD-40

Wheel assemblies on a concrete pad. Surprisingly, the pad is not level.

Line up of wheels and axles and roller bearings on the storage pad

Brand new transfer table replaced a maze of switches

Truck being rebuilt. Robot torches cut off the bearing ring and robot welders fasten a new one on.

Crate of replacement truck springs

Springs within springs

Truck side frames stacked on a rack ready for rehab

Container well car body is jacked up off the truck. The car owner contracts with UP for 5 year maintenance.

This is a unique sign. Shot was telephoto across the building at a far wall.

Mechanical reefer jacked up in the air being completely rebuilt.

There are still C&NW yellow covered hoppers around. This one has been "tagged". The scaffolding is interesting.

Closeup of a freight car jack

A view of the main car shop building. The roof is 4" thick concrete. Work is in 10 hour shifts Monday - Thursday. The shops are loud and the work is dirty. The shop buildings cannot be heated or cooled.

Sandblasting complex. This would be a great subject to model. Various types of abrasive materials are used, some of which can be recycled.

Hopper has been sandblasted and cleaned, spot primered, and masked for complete exterior painting

The car will be painted by automation, but humans will follow with touch up work

Decals are applied and a new remote controlled refrigeration unit is installed in this reefer. UP can monitor every car in the system and control its temperature by satellite.

Pallets of couplers wait their turn to be installed. I looked, but none of them are stamped Micro-Trains.

Rebuilt and repainted hopper and reefer sit out for inspection. UP still letters the hopper for C&NW.

This C&NW hopper has been overly weathered

Coil steel car aluminum covers lined up in a row in the back lot

The last operating DD-40 with a fresh paint job basks in the sun
